Four leaf clover and words good luck vs good coverage

Good fortune is nice. Good coverage is better. Feel confident in your protection — no four-leaf clover required.

Many people are surprised to learn that the biggest risks in their everyday life are often tied to major exclusions they didn’t even know existed. The good news? Some of them can be added back with the right endorsements or policies.

🏡 At Home: “I Thought That Was Covered…”

Three common—and costly—home insurance gaps come from:

  • Flood & surface water - Standard home policies don’t include flood coverage. Rising water, storm surge, and heavy rain runoff require a separate flood policy. This is a government issued policy that usually has a waiting period before coverage goes into effect.
  • Seepage – hydrostatic pressure - Hydrostatic pressure occurs when groundwater pushes against your foundation walls, forcing water through cracks—even if the structure itself is sound. Most home policies exclude this. Some carriers have certain limiting endorsements available while some carriers won’t cover it at all.
  • Special limits of liability - Items like jewelry, computers, cameras, musical instruments, and hobby equipment often have very low limits and may be restricted based on the cause of loss. Even a covered peril might only pay a small fraction of the value unless you schedule or separately insure the items.

🚗 On the Road: Who’s Actually Covered?

Auto policies have their own hidden traps:

  • Household members not listed on your policy - If someone living in your home regularly drives your vehicle but isn’t listed, a claim can be denied. Check with your agent to be sure exposures are covered.
  • Adult children using your vehicle but no longer living at home - Once they move out, they typically need their own policy—even if the car is still titled to you. Avoid potential gaps and have a conversation with your agent.
  • Business auto not extending to personal use (like rental cars) - Most business auto policies do not protect you when renting a car for personal travel. Without a special endorsement or personal auto coverage, you’re exposed.

🎯 The Bottom Line

Luck runs out. Coverage shouldn’t.

Know your exclusions, understand what can be added back in, and make sure your insurance aligns with the risks of your real life—not just what you assume is covered.
